DOTCOM Phase #3, Module 2 - Exploring REEL BAD ARABS

Hello Dotcom! I miss you all so much, now each of us is busy with something but I am sure we all remember about every minute that we spend together....

Thousands of apologizes for being late, but it is because of the absence of internet...

So when I first saw the word arab, I immediately remeber the history about arabs, how in 7-th century arab tribes joined each other and create a great country with conquering a lot of countries.

1.At first when I heard the arabian music, and so images about them and then the nice part from ''Aladin'' this all influenced my limbic brain, especially the speech of talking man, it made me think..

The dying people, voices of guns, killers, and there was a minute that everything turned to fire this all were fearing, and it influenced my reptilian brain.

And of course these video made me think and think, at first I was askinh myself are arabs really so?are they cruel, killers? No this is all just stereotyping, a thing which cover the reality, and shows things that aren't real or true..Here is my neo-cortex brain.

2.. PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES. HERE are some techniques- HYPERBALL- by using this they want to show us the bad sides of arabs..WARM FUZZIES- this video wants to have an influence on us by the different people in video, to make us fear or thing the way they want. Big lie- here is used big lie because we can't thing the same for the whole nation, every nation has its bad and good sides. TIMING- this video is 5 minutes 20 seconds long, but we see persuasive techniques...

3.PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES- I thing that this video is very powerful, the voice the images and especially the music are attracting..The parts from different films and the sceneries made me curious and I didn't want to stop.. I think this is the most important, when the movie attracts the audience..

4. SUGGESTIONS. The movie was great, but I think that it would be better if they had a lot of thoughts, they should interviewed common people, about what they think of arabs, do they understand that this all is sterotyping..

5. I will recommend this video not only for my friends but for the grown-ups, too, because this video will make them understand not only sterotyping about arabs, but stereotyping about everything that is next to us, I thing the great part of people has his own stereotyping about something, otherwise all this wars, argues will not happen...And we can fight against this if we ourselves realize how the stereotyping spoils our life, then we can proove it to everybody else...

DOTCOM Launches PHASE 3- Module #1: Reflecting on DOTCOM, Phase 2

HELLO everybody, at first I want to say that this summer was the best in my life. Now I am ready for more work..

1. What proved the most challenging part of our July Phase 2 DOTCOM experience for

you?

The most challenging part of our July Phase 2 experience for me was to be tolerant,

try to understand, it was so difficult to listen to different opinions and express yours..It was hard to mobilize 3 different ideas, to agree with each other and create a film..But we succeeded!!

2. What proved the most rewarding part of our July Phase 2 DOTCOM

experience for you?
THe most rewarding day was the Film Night, when we were waiting for our films to be shown and to be critisized.We were all very excited.

And the days that we spent working, were rewarding too, because we learnt a lot-

3. What proved the most fun part of our July Phase 2

DOTCOM experience for you?

Every day that we spent in America was full of fun..The kayaking trip was very funny, pool party, rope game.I remeber with great pleasure how funny and nice it was, when we were returning to our hosts by bus,and all the way Jacob and David were singing,their songs were wonderful..4. What are you most excited about, looking forward to our online Phase 3 DOTCOM experience coming up this fall?

I am looking for very informative modules, new work, I am looking forward to everything connected with DOTCOM..

DOTCOM film night

Oh, I am really very excited now..It was wonderful, I will never forget this day!! Guys I will miss you all. We really don't want to go!! I think everybody enjoyed our 10 REEL ACTION films. Now we can proudly say, that we succeded.. Here is a picture of my group, I am really proud of it!! It was so nice to work with such persons!!One....Two...Three...REEL ACTION!!!!!!!This night will always be in our hearts, and every time when we remember it, we shall remember our hard and nice work, and all the minutes, that we spent together...

DAY# 5.Our First DOTCOM Reflection Assignment

1.What did you learn in Washington D.C about media?
At first I want to say that Washington is a very beautiful place..So I spent an amazing time in Newseum, which reflects the history of America, and gives a lot of information about everything..I will never forget the expressions I saw there..''LET THE PEOPLE KNOW THE FACTS AND THE COUNTRY WILL BE SAFE''-Lincoln. Or '' The free press is the cornerstone of democracy'' I agree with this expression..So we had an owesome converstation in State Department, and Radio Station, we were speaking about the things we were interested in or we were concerned about..
2. What did you learn in Washington, D.C. about your student colleagues from the other two countries?
Ok, as Adzerbajanis weren't in Washington, I can tell something about American students..So they are all very smart and nice. Some of them are funny, the others are serious, but they all always smile, and they are friendly..I learnt a lot about their thoughts, which were different from ours..I love them all, and I am proud that I am working with such an amazing people...I imagine how I shall miss them.oh!

3. What has been hard or challenging about the DOTCOM program so far?
I think it was hard to communicate with various people, and try to understand them, and express your own opinion. And the hardest thing was to overcome the cultural shock, I think I didn't succed yet. As everything is different, even the food and wearing..

4. What has been exciting and rewarding about the DOTCOM program so far?
I like the way we get to know each other, I liked the team buiding games. I like the way Dr. Williams explain us everything about our work, and it make me be more active and thing about something anusual. It was to exciting on 4th of July, the Independence day was celebrated in anusual way, it was great, especially when Rob Williams and Dave appeared with our chiken Lenin..

MY TOP THREE REEL ACTION THEMES

1.SOCIAL JUSTICE. " The world is still standing because of truth, peace and justice", I like this idea because it reflects the goal of our fight. I think we must be just, and must fight against injustice. Why to put up with injustice and look how innocents are blamed, poor people are isolated, our rights aren't protected? We must realize that this life is in our hands, if we want we can change it..Let's do it.. Every time I see injustice I can't keep myself I immediately begin speaking and criticising.. Many people tell me that I am just harming myself and I can't change anything...And everytime I tell them that if all the people think so, nothing can be changed, they are right I can't change it alone but we can do it together!!!

2.GOVERNANCE. This is a very serious and important system. I think that it is related with responsibility, great diplomacy, and patriotism..But today most people don't realize this, they just think about their position, but a real governor must think that a great amount of people has believed him and he is discouriging them? Oh, he must think how to improve his country's condition how dicrease the poverty,but this isn't happening, none of them thinks so..This is a shame..I have met with people of government, disccused a lot of problems with them, all of them is promising to solve some problems, but nothing is done.

I think the day will come,and the new generation will come with new ideas,and will think about his country..But we, our generation must do something just now.

A patriot, isn't a person who does great things for his country, but each of us can be a patriot, if he keeps his fatherland clean, and doesn't drop a thing in the ground..

3.MEDIA. Media is the most important, because it let us express our ideas, and thoughts..We can make our voice listnened, and the issues we are concerned about be presented.. I have already used some kinds of media, in order to represent the problems of our country.. Media is a sourse of information, knowledge. We can be informed about many problems, and if we want we can join them and do something.... And ,of course, after the hard-working day, we can listen to a beautiful music, and look at beautiful pictures, and in this way we can relax........

THE BEST SONG OF EUROVISION

Hi I like the Eurovision very much. Every year I am following it with great pleasure..But till now the best song for we is Tornero.. It is from Eurovision 2006...Here it is enjoy it.........

PHASE 2. 90second's elevator pitch

Hi, as you know I am Lilit. I am one of DOTCOM participants. I like this program very much, it has changed my life, I gained a lot from it. It gave me an opportunity to present myself, to express my ideas freely. Now I have a lot of friends and I imagine how many friends I would have , when we return from US.
I am an active and cheerful person, I think one must make his life interesting and funny, I am trying to do so. I am trying to find my right way in this life.
I like to take part in many competitions and programs, and of course to be the winner.During this programs I learnt about democracy, tolerance, laws, rights..
I love my country very much it is a wonderful place, I like its history. I am deeply interested in history, it is everything for me, I can't live without it.. I think a real citizen must know not only his rights and duties, but also his history, so I am trying to be a real citizen.. We must know who we are, and where we are from..
I have traveled a lot, I have been in many countries and historical places, but the most interesting country for me is Italy, it is a very attractive country...
I like music, especially classic music, I like to play the piano..

SEVEN WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD

As I am very interested in history, I liked this video at first sight.It is about seven wonders of the ancient world.It is very informative. Enjoy it and think about being the 8-th wonder of the world!!!!

MODULE # 7_WRAPPING UP PHASE 1

I really enjoy DOTCOM program. I got aquainted with many interesting people.
1.A. The most exciting part of the DOTCOM phase 1 were the modules, which were interesting and useful. They made us be responsible and careful. Every time I did them with great pleasure and responsibility.I also communicated with a lot of people with different thoughts. We share together our knowledge. I read very carefully about the social issues they were concerned about. And I considered some of them to be discussed during our meetings.
B. To tell the truth, the most challenging part of DOTCOM phase 1 were the videos. Every time I searched them very long.As I wanted them to be interesting and pleasant.
C. I wish DOTCOM program never ends, because it will include more pupils that are worried about general problems, and in such a way they will built their future and their just countries and will have their influences on media.
I think it will be interesting to do one more module only about social issues the participants are concrened about.

2. This video is very funny for me as I am fond of animals and it is unusual when they dance.I like unusual things.Enjoy it!!!!

BARCAMP

I think it will be good to discuss Web technologies in Armenian schools. It is very important as children, especially in regions even don't know what it is. I think it is an interesting theme to work with.If you are interested you can join me and we can create a very active group.

Module # 5-THE PERSUASIVE LANGUAGE OF MEDIA

Watching this video we use our three brains.At first we read "Happy birthday" using our necortex brain and we understand that we are going to watch someone's birthday party, then we hear a very favourite and famous song"Happy birthday to you'',here we use our limbic brain.During video we see a lovely child, but later we get surprised to see him going mad,here is our reptilian brain.
This video uses the following persuasive techniques.
1.HUMOR.In this video humor has a great roll, because a young man is making his boss angry by his present.And all the people are funny because they are only interested in the present. 2.BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. In this video good looking people are used, in order to make it impressive and interesting.
3.BANDWAGON. Here we see that everybody is singing , and the young man is being persuaded to do so.
4.DENIAL. By this persuasive kind, the video is persuading us to avoid unpleasant moments by eating new mars
.5.HYPERBOLE. In this video we hear that if we have a black day mars will help us. I think it is hyperbole,as we can't solve our problems by just eating mars.
6.WARM FUZZIES. This video wants to have an influence on us by a lovely child, and good looking people.
7.TIMING. This video lasts only 51 minutes, but we see 8 persuasive techniques of media here

CHARLES CHAPLIN

Chaplin was born in 1889 in London. His mother was so poor that she had to send him to an orphanage.But he started acting at the age of five,and was soon a successful comic in the theatre.When he went to America,he got into films and became a star almost immediately.In 1916,Chaplin earned $10.000 a week, and an extra $150.000 per film.

His silent films were perfect works of art. Without words,he could say everything. He created a language with his face and his body. In 'The Kid'(1921) Chaplin is a window repairer.The little boy helps him by breaking windows! In most of his films, Chaplin plays a poor man on the streets. But the actor was a millionaire.

In 1929,the age of the silent film came to an end. A new technology made it possible to record sound and pictures together. The 'talkies' arrived.They were very different from silent films. The public loved them,of course.But they were the end of the road for many film-makers.Some old director just couldn't change their style.Some great silent actors had terrible voices.They couldn't get parts in the 'talkies'.

Chaplin's voice was good but he didn't really want to work in the talkies.His love was the silent films. In 1931 he made another claasic film,'City Lights', but again it was silent. Even 'Modern Times' probably his successful film,made in 1936,had music but no dialogue.

In 1938 Chaplin moved to Sweden and lived there till the end of his life.

THEATRE AND CINEMA:how it all begun

The first theatrical performances took place in ancient Greece. The Greek drama developed from hymn sung to Dionysius, the god of wine and good life. But it did not become true theatre until performances included stories of the other gods and actors to represent them.
The first actor known was called Thespis. He was the leading singer and traveled from his birthplace to Athens in a cart that carried all his belongings and could be turned into a stage performance. In Athens he won a prize at the new drama festival. People believe that he was also the first man who separated himself from other singers to make a dialogue with them. He was the first professional performer who was brave enough to play a god. Before him this role had always belonged to priests or kings.

CINEMA is much youger than theatre.It was born at the end of 19th century.The first people who showed the first movies to a paying public were the Lumiere Brothers of France.They did this at the Grand Cafe,Boulevard des Capucines,Paris,on February 1896.This was the first cinema show and it was qucikly followed by many others in all parts of the world.The first films showed moving people and transport or newsreels of processions and wars,and short comedies.In 1901 France was the first country to preduce a dramatic film, The Story of a Crime, which was followed by The Great Train Robbery in the United States in 1903.

At this time cinema rapidly developed in both the New and the Old World.

JUSTICE

.THE WORLD IS STILL STANDING BECAUSE OF TRUTH, JUSTICE AND PEACE.

.Every time when the injustice wins, it seems that there has never been justice.

.THERE MUST BE EQUALITY AMONG PEOPLE, without considering their age,gender,colour of body,belief and social condition.

.The worst evil is indifference. To know and not struggle, means to put up with injustice.

I think we must'nt let this (in the video) happen. We must struggle both for our and for other people's rights,because if a person's rights are in danger it means that all people's rights are violated.

THE BEATLES_BEST SONG

OUR BRAINS ON MEDIA

Here is an interesting video.This video influences our limbic brain,because here we see changing images and hear music,which makes us happy.During these changing images we are looking forward how will look the next new image,so we start imagining and thinking,which is the rezult of our necortex brain.

1. My name is Lilit.I am 15.I live in Nor Hachn.There are 5 members in my family-my mather,father,sister,brother and me.I like to study history, english, democracy,human rights.My dream is to become a lawer and intelligent,developed person in order to be useful for my country.I attend music school,where I play the piano and sing in the choir.

As I am a communicative person with a lot of interest I am a member and the main secretary of " Young politics club" in Erevan.Our club started its activity in 2008.We have met with ministers and prime minister and found solutions to many problems in our country.In July 2008 our club went to Xarabax with the prime minister to spend some days there and to know a lot about people's condition.We are going to meet prime minister once more in February.

I enjoy collective work with clever children,as you can learn a lot from them.I have an experience in collective work.I'll be very happy to work with dotcom participants.Our first meeting was very interesting.All the children were very friendly.
I like travelling very much.I have been in many countries -Russia,Georgia,Turkey,Italy,France,Germany,Greece,Austria.The best place for me was Italy and Austria,especially Verona,Venice,Florence and Vienna.

I am not shy, I am a very active and cheerful person but if I am really worried about something and I am not able to do something useful I become annoyed and sad.Sometimes I am dissapointed of many things but there are people who always encourage me and I don't give up my hope and begin fighting.

2.My favourite media experiences are listening to music, reading books and newspapers.These are very important for me.They complete my life. I like The Beatles,especially "Yesterday" and Yanni,especially "Untill the last moment".Now I am reading a book about Napaleon,which is very interesting.Last month I read "Oliver Twist" which impressed me deeply.I read newspapers every day,because I don't want to miss a day event.

3.I am very concerned about social,educative and economic step in my country and we discuss them in our club.Years ago I and my friends complained about school conditions.We created our group and applied to our director.She helped us. We wrote different letters.After a year our school was repaired.Now it is very comfartable.We haven't got a library in our town and our
cultural club doesn't work.I rose that problems during our meeting with prime ministers.He promised to solve that problems.


4.I have a lot to contribute to the group of participants.I shall use my knowledge about history,art,democracy and cllasic music. I shall encourage and help them if they have difficulties.I'll suggest them such problems that are universal,for example homeless and poverty and convince them to join me.I am sure that media will help us to introduce that problems to the world.Every 3 seconds a child is dying because of poverty and hunger.WE MUST HELP THEM!

KINDS OF MEDIA

- 1.BOOKS. I have read and I continue reading books,as they are our life, they give as a lot-information,experience,right way of life. So they can partly develop us. I like reading historic,dramatic books. Now I am reading a book about Napaleon's life.

2.NEWSPAPERS. I enjoy reading politic newspapers as I am very interested in politic life of my country and I think that every real citizen must follow it. To tell the truth I sometimes read newspapers about stars in order to know what kind of person they are out of stage.

3.MUSIC. I can't imagine me without music.When I am listening to music,especially classic music,I forget about my problems,it makes me feel happy.I listen to it by mp3 files or radio.I play the piano,it is my favourite instrument and I also like duduk.I currently listen to Yanni.He is the best for me.I especially like his "Until the last moment"and "Key to imagination". I also like The Beatles.

4.TELEVISION. If I have free time I watch TV. I am interested in TV programs,which are about politic life,history,traditions,art,presidents,famous people. I like to watch such programs,in order to gain a lot information about other countries.I think good TV programs can partly develop us.

5.VIDEO GAMES.I seldom play video games.I like to play Need for Speed,spider,cards,cannonball. I play video games,in order to train my mind and to gain quickness.

6.COMPUTERS. I use computer very much.I can keep there my songs,videos,pictures and poems,and finally I can play games,copy needable articles.

7.INTERNET. Internet is the best kind of media for me. No book can replace it. It is a big source of information. You can take any information,video,song,article you need. I use internet not only for these,but to communicate with my relatives and friends in many countries. I visit Yandex,Yahoo,YouTube,Facebook,Mail,Google.....
